Bars & Restaurants

We have found good food, drink etc. at the following places. They appeal to our tastes though so they may not be your type of place but have proved reliable. In no particular order……

  • Haz Stex Alfredo on the corner of Jozsef Korut and Baross Ter is a cosy all-day and late night bar although it does decent food. Food is served very late on. It’s all a bit stodgy and best for meat eaters but there are a couple of decent veggie options. Try the fried vegetables. Your heart won’t thank you but it’s good stuff. Does some good dark beer – try dark Dreher. 7.3% ABV so it's strong stuff and should be respected. Look for an illuminated red STEX sign.

  • There’s a Chinese take-away across the road and to the left on Jozsef Korut. Open til about 10pm and does some veggie stuff. The woman is miserable and needs to be cajoled into letting you buy off the menu. She prefers to try to make you buy the food that’s out under the counter. Don’t listen and instead, ask for the menu. Good Chinese though and fairly large portions.

  • Frank Zappa bar is a good, quirky late night bar and has a terrace in the summer. Out of the flat, turn left and cross the road. Turn right after about 400 yards when you reach the casino and it’s a 2 minute walk down the street. It’s on Krudy Gyula Utca.

  • Cziga (it means "Snail") is a nice, cosy, quiet, friendly, bohemian sort of place just round the corner. Good for a coffee, beer and food. You must definitely go for breakfast. Out of the front door, turn left and left again and it’s about 100 yards on your left next to the Market.

  • Café Vian on Liszt Ferenc Ter is great for afternoon cakes. Try the Lemon pie. Good for Brunch as well. Good quality food. Free wifi. It's a pleasant place to hang out, especially in the summer.

  • Menza is also good for an evening meal. A few veggie options. Book a table for the evening as it gets busy.

  • There’s a great Greek restaurant next to the river. Get to the “Great Market” and walk about 5 minutes, following the river in the direction of the Parliament Building – keep the river on your left. You may need to book on a Friday/Sat evening. If it’s sunny, go for lunch and sit on the terrace. If it's your birthday you  get a free dessert.

  • Indigo is a good Indian restaurant between Nyugati and Oktagon. Take the tram to Oktagon and walk in the direction of Nyugati. You’ll reach “California Coffee Company”. Turn left here and the Indian is on the next corner on the right.

  • Another Indian is Karma Sutra on Oktober 6 Street. Between the Parliament Building and St Stephens Basilica.

  • Soul Café and Trattoria on Raday Utca are good. The former is very good – try the Bruschetta – and the latter is a good pizza place. The fudge brownie was really nice.

  • If you are a hummus fan take a look at www.hummusbar.hu It’s great for hummus/falafel type food.

  • There’s a nice little café in the middle of Szabadsag Ter. It’s close to the Parliament and worth a stop if you are in the neighbourhood and especially if the weather’s fine.

  • Just across the road from Szabadsag Teris a great café called Farger. Really nice coffee and good for a sandwich or cake. Main courses not too brilliant though. Nice terrace when it's warm.

  • Nearby Jegbufe on the corner of Jozsef Korut and Baross Utca is good for coffee and cakes.

  • 360 Bar on Andrassy Utca is an upmarket rooftop cafe/bar/restaurant with great views of the city.

  • There’s a good (but worthy) veggie restaurant (called Eden) at Batthyany Ter in Buda. It’s moved so don’t trust LP.  If you have the river behind you, head out of the square on the left hand corner – keeping the church on your left. Cross the main road (with the river still behind you) and down the street (the church is now over your left shoulder). The restaurant is ahead of you on your right. Only open at weekday lunchtimes but good for veggies and cheap.

  • Vapiano on Becsi utca (close to Vorosmarty sq) is a nice modern Italian place. Pizza and pasta are around HUF1200+ (good quality) and the salads are good. You order at the bar and pay with a swipe card on your way out. It’s very self service but good food. There are comfy seats upstairs where you can finish your wine off comfortably. Great desserts.

  • Oinos Bistro in Rakoczi Ter is lovely. It's on the outside of the market hall.

  • Just at the back of the market hallis Kek Lo....a very laid back bar and vegan cafe.
